Acclaimed artist Matt Wain was born and raised in the Thames Valley, UK. After studying at Salisbury College of Art he travelled extensively throughout Asia and lived in Sydney and London before settling in Pangbourne, Berkshire in the United Kingdom. Wain still travels widely today – on commissions and on personal trips all over the world.
Matt Wain has a reputation for his fluid style and use of movement. Wain captures the living world with a unique enthusiasm for the relationship between time and space. His 'Living' collection defines his passion to capture the patterns found in nature and the memories and emotions they evoke in us.
"I'm inspired the world around me, I still love paddling around in the surf, looking up through the leaves of a tree, lying in the grass."
For this collection, Wain still uses the disciplines he learnt while shooting film:
"I feel it's essential that I don't add in effects after I take the picture, that everything is created in camera. Messing about at the computer after you get the shot can give images an unreal element, which can be great, but is the polar opposite of what I'm trying to achieve."
Typically, Wain uses natural light and works in situ. He explains: "It is essential for me to keep my art natural, working only with sunlight and entirely on location.
A recurring theme in the collection is his use of movement - focusing less on the physical subject and more on its essence – together with light and composition. It is this motion, which imbues his work with a subtle atmosphere, masking the formal subject and revealing serenity.
In amongst fits of wandering Matt Wain lives with his wife, two daughters, a cat, a much-loved mountain bike, a Canadian canoe and an allotment.
